What happened

On 28 July 2026, an earthquake of magnitude 7.1 struck Kumamoto Prefecture on the Japanese island of Kyushu; at least 34 people died. Semiconductor plants of Sony, Renesas, Tokyo Electron and TSMC subsidiary JASM, as well as automotive plants of Toyota, Nissan and Mitsubishi, interrupted production for safety inspections and repairs. Even plants without structural damage ceased operations because supplier parts and logistics failed. Initial estimates indicate insured losses exceeding USD 1.1 billion.

Potential impact

Production outages lasting several days to several weeks in the semiconductor and automotive industries; Sony did not expect to return to pre-earthquake operating levels until mid-August 2026, while Toyota and Nissan suspended several plants until early August. The disruption affects chip availability for automotive and electronics via global supply chains.

Relevance for companies

Kyushu is a focal point of global chip manufacturing — European automotive and electronics manufacturers bear the contingent business interruption risk of their Asian suppliers. The case underscores the importance of multi-sourcing, inventory buffers, and CBI coverage for natural hazards at supplier locations.
